NYC Mayor Bloomberg's Budget Sees a Windfall

New York City tax revenue is expected to be $2 billion
higher than anticipated this year!!!!

This windfall obviates plans to slash teaching positions
beyond the 6,166 slots the Mayor proposed slashing
in November. The head count reduction in the Education
Department will compromise 4,666 layoffs and 1,500
others through attrition.

For weeks, Mayor Bloomberg has warned New Yorkers
that state cuts in education aid could result in massive
layoffs to the nation's largest school system.

When Mayor Bloomberg presents his preliminary budget
proposal on Thursday, he will outline how the City's
financial and economic outlook continues to improve. He
will demonstrate his commitment to education by funneling
addition city money to schools to prevent even greater
teacher layoffs. Since June, the administration has increased
city funding for education by nearly $2 billion to replace
losses in state and federal aid.
